Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, April 2017

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 7,0% in April 2017 compared with April 2016.

Income from accommodation increased by 11,4% year-on-year in April 2017, the result of a 3,4% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 7,7% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In April 2017, the types of accommodation that recorded the largest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:
• caravan parks and camping sites (86,4%);
• 'other' accommodation (27,8%); and
• guest-houses and guest-farms (13,2%).

The main positive contributors to the 11,4% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in April 2017 were ‘other’ accommodation (contributing 7,3 percentage points) and hotels (contributing 2,6 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 6,7% in the three months ended April 2017 compared with the three months ended April 2016. The main contributors to this increase were hotels (4,1% and contributing 2,7 percentage points) and ‘other’ accommodation (14,1% and contributing 3,7 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 1,3% month-on-month in April 2017. Positive month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:
•   caravans parks and camping sites (18,9%);
•   guest-houses and guest farms (7,6%); and
•   hotels (2,0%).
