Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 3,1% in January 2017 compared with January 2016.

Income from accommodation increased by 6,4% year-on-year in January 2017, the result of a 3,7% decrease in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 10,4% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In January 2017, the types of accommodation that recorded positive year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

• 'other' accommodation (10,3%);
• hotels (5,2%); and
• guest-houses and guest-farms (3,5%) .

The main contributors to the 6,4% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in January 2017 were:

• hotels (contributing 3,3 percentage points); and
• 'other' accommodation (contributing 2,9 percentage points) .

Income from accommodation increased by 6,5% in the three months ended January 2017 compared with the three months ended January 2016. The main contributors to this increase were:

• hotels (7,0% and contributing 4,5 percentage points); and
• 'other' accommodation (4,1% and contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 4,5% month-on-month in January 2017. Positive month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

• 'other' accommodation (14,7%); and
• hotels (1,6%).
