Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, October 2016

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 7,9% in October 2016 compared with October 2015.

Income from accommodation increased by 12,8% year-on-year in October 2016, the result of a 3,7% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and an 8,8% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In October 2016, the types of accommodation that recorded the highest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (49,2%); and
  • 'other' accommodation (15,6%).

The main contributors to the 12,8% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in October 2016 were:

  • hotels (contributing 7,4 percentage points); and
  • 'other' accommodation (contributing 4,3 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 10,9% in the three months ended October 2016 compared with the three months ended October 2015. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • hotels (9,0% and contributing 5,9 percentage points); and
  • 'other' accommodation (14,1% and contributing 3,8 percentage points) .

Seasonally adjusted income from accommodation increased by 4,9% month-on-month in October 2016. Positive month-on-month growth rates were recorded for:

  • caravan parks and camping sites (25,3%);
  • 'other' accommodation (7,0%); and
  • hotels (4,4%).
