Key findings: P6410 - Tourist accommodation, July 2016

Measured in nominal terms (current prices), total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 12,7% in July 2016 compared with July 2015.

Income from accommodation increased by 16,8% year-on-year in July 2016, the result of a 4,3% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 12,0% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold.

In July 2016, the types of accommodation that recorded the highest year-on-year growth in income from accommodation were:

  • 'other' accommodation (21,8%);
  • guest-houses and guest-farms (16,6%); and
  • hotels (14,9%).

The main contributors to the 16,8% year-on-year increase in income from accommodation in July 2016 were:

  • hotels (contributing 9,7 percentage points); and
  • 'other' accommodation (contributing 6,1 percentage points).

Income from accommodation increased by 12,8% in the three months ended July 2016 compared with the three months ended July 2015. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • hotels (12,2% and contributing 8,1 percentage points); and
  • 'other' accommodation (16,5% and contributing 4,4 percentage points).
