Key findings: P6242.1 - Retail trade sales, October 2019

Measured in real terms (constant 2015 prices), retail trade sales increased by 0,3% year-on-year in October 2019. The largest positive annual growth rates were recorded for retailers in:

  • food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (4,5% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point); and
  • household furniture, appliances and equipment (3,2% and contributing 0,2 of a percentage point).

Retailers in hardware, paint and glass decreased by 2,5% (contributing -0,2 of a percentage point) over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales decreased by 0,2% in October 2019 compared with September 2019. This followed month-on-month changes of 0,6% in September 2019 and -1,1% in August 2019. In the three months ended October 2019, seasonally adjusted retail trade sales decreased by 0,5% compared with the previous three months.

Retail trade sales increased by 0,6% in the three months ended October 2019 compared with the three months ended October 2018. The largest contributors to this increase were:

  • all 'other' retailers (1,8% and contributing 0,2 of a percentage point); and
  • retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (1,0% and contributing 0,2 of a percentage point).
