Key findings: P6242.1 - Retail trade sales, June 2016

Measured in real terms (constant 2012 prices), retail trade sales increased by 1,7% year-on-year in June 2016. The highest positive annual growth rates were recorded for retailers in:

  • pharmaceuticals and medical goods, cosmetics and toiletries (9,2%); and
  • food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (7,5%).

The main contributor to the 1,7% increase was general dealers (contributing 1,3 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales decreased by 2,0% month-on-month in June 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of 3,3% in May 2016 and -1,5% in April 2016. In the second quarter of 2016, seasonally adjusted retail trade sales increased by 0,3% compared with the previous quarter.

Retail trade sales increased by 2,6% in the second quarter of 2016 compared with the second quarter of 2015. The main contributors to this increase were:

  • general dealers (2,2% and contributing 0,9 of a percentage point); and
  • all 'other' retailers (5,0% and contributing 0,6 of a percentage point).
