Retail trade sales decrease in real terms

Retail trade sales, at constant (2008) prices, for the three months ending February 2009 reflected a decrease of 1,0% compared with the three months ending February 2008, while sales for the same period in 2008 increased by 3,0%. Retail trade sales, at constant (2008) prices, for February 2009 decreased by 4,5% compared with February 2008.

Retail trade sales, at current prices, for the three months ending February 2009 increased by 10,8% compared with the three months ending February 2008. The major contributors to this increase were general dealers (5,5 percentage points), retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (1,9 percentage points) and retailers of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores and other retailers (both contributing 1,6 percentage points). Retailers in household furniture, appliances and equipment contributed negatively (-0,4 of a percentage point) to the change in retail trade sales.

Retail trade sales, at current prices, for February 2009 increased by 7,0% compared with February 2008, while sales for the corresponding period in 2008 increased by 14,7%.
