Building statistics

The value of recorded building plans passed by larger municipalities (at current prices) decreased by 2,5% (-R2 744,1 million) in 2017 compared with 2016. Two of the three major categories reported decreases, namely non-residential buildings (contributing -2,8 percentage points or -R3 147,1 million) and residential buildings (contributing -1,4 percentage points or -R1 520,5 million). An increase was reported in the additions and alterations category (contributing 1,7 percentage points or R1 923,5 million).

The value of buildings reported as completed to larger municipalities (at current prices) increased by 19,5% (R11 953,6 million) in 2017 compared with 2016. All three major categories reported increases, namely non-residential buildings (contributing 11,4 percentage points or R6 982,9 million), residential buildings (contributing 6,3 percentage points or R3 849,5 million) and additions and alterations (contributing 1,8 percentage points or R1 121,1 million).
