Key findings: P3041.2 - Manufacturing: Production and sales, January 2019

Manufacturing production increased by 0,3% in January 2019 compared with January 2018. The largest positive contributions were made by the following divisions:

  • food and beverages (2,9% and contributing 0,8 of a percentage point); and
  • petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (0,9% and contributing 0,2 of a percentage point).

The largest negative contribution was made by the basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery division (-3,2% and contributing -0,6 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 2,0% in January 2019 compared with December 2018. This followed month-on-month changes of 1,0% in December 2018 and -0,2% in November 2018.

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production increased by 0,4% in the three months ended January 2019 compared with the previous three months. Seven of the ten manufacturing divisions reported positive growth rates over this period.

The largest positive contributions were made by the following divisions:

  • petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (2,7% and contributing 0,6 of a percentage point);
  • food and beverages (1,6% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point); and
  • furniture and 'other' manufacturing (7,5% and contributing 0,2 of a percentage point).

The largest negative contributions were made by the following divisions:

  • basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery (-3,6% and contributing -0,7 of a percentage point); and
  • wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing (-3,2% and contributing -0,4 of a percentage point).
