Key findings: P3041.2 - Manufacturing: Production and sales, December 2017

Manufacturing production increased by 2,0% in December 2017 compared with December 2016. The largest contributions were made by the following divisions:

  • petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (3,3% and contributing 0,8 of a percentage point);
  • wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing (-5,8% and contributing -0,7 of a percentage point);
  • basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery (3,6% and contributing 0,6 of a percentage point);
  • food and beverages (1,5% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point); and
  • motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment (8,0% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production increased by 1,1% in December 2017 compared with November 2017. This followed month-on-month changes of 1,1% in November 2017 and 1,0% in October 2017. The seasonally adjusted production index (base 2015=100) in December 2017 (103,1) was the highest since September 2008 (104,0).

In 2017, total manufacturing production decreased by 0,5% compared with 2016. The largest contributions were made by the following divisions:

  • petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (-3,8% and contributing -0,9 of a percentage point);
  • basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery (3,9% and contributing 0,7 of a percentage point);
  • food and beverages (2,0% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point); and
  • wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing (-3,5% and contributing -0,4 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production increased by 1,5% in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared with the third quarter of 2017. Seven of the ten manufacturing divisions reported positive growth rates over this period.

The largest contribution to the 1,5% increase was made by the petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products division (4,0% and contributing 1,0 percentage point).
