Key findings: P3041.2 - Manufacturing: Production and sales, January 2017

Manufacturing production increased by 0,8% in January 2017 compared with January 2016. The largest positive contributions were made by the following divisions:

  • basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery (3,5% and contributing 0,6 of a percentage point);
  • petroleum, chemicals, rubber and plastic products (1,7% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point); and
  • furniture and 'other' manufacturing (21,6% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point).

Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 0,4% in January 2017 compared with December 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of 0,2% in December 2016 and 0,3% in November 2016.


Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 0,4% in the three months ended January 2017 compared with the previous three months. Seven of the ten manufacturing divisions reported negative growth rates over this period.

The following divisions made the largest negative contributions to the 0,4% decrease:

  • petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (-1,3% and contributing -0,3 of a percentage point);
  • motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment (-3,4% and contributing -0,2 of a percentage point);
  • food and beverages (-0,6% and contributing -0,2 of a percentage point); and
  • wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing (-1,2% and contributing -0,2 of a percentage point).

The basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery division increased by 3,2% and contributed 0,5 of a percentage point in the three months ended January 2017 compared with the previous three months.
