Key findings regarding mining production

Mining production decreased by 4,2% year-on-year in June 2019. The largest negative contributors were:

·         gold (-16,0% and contributing -2,1 percentage points);

·         diamonds (-33,2% and contributing -1,7 percentage points); and

·         PGMs (-6,3% and contributing -1,6 percentage points).

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 3,3% in June 2019 compared with May 2019. This followed month-on-month changes of 3,1% in May 2019 and -1,7% in April 2019.

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 3,5% in the second quarter of 2019 compared with the first quarter of 2019. The largest positive contributors were iron ore (11,8% and contributing 1,4 percentage points), manganese ore (21,2% and contributing 1,0 percentage point) and coal (3,6% and contributing 0,9 of a percentage point).

 

Key findings regarding mineral sales

Mineral sales increased by 6,5% year-on-year in June 2019. The largest positive contributors were:

·         iron ore (76,6% and contributing 5,9 percentage points);

·         PGMs (9,9% and contributing 2,3 percentage points); and

·         ‘other’ metallic minerals (70,7% and contributing 1,8 percentage points).

 

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 2,3% in June 2019 compared with May 2019. This followed month-on-month changes of -0,8% in May 2019 and 1,3% in April 2019.

In the second quarter of 2019 the seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices was 2,6% higher compared with the first quarter of 2019.
