Production: results for October 2024

Mining production increased by 1,4% year-on-year in October 2024. The largest positive contributors were:

·        PGMs (3,3% and contributing 1,0 percentage point);

·        chromium ore (14,0% and contributing 0,7 of a percentage point);

·        diamonds (27,9% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point); and

·        coal (1,8% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point).

Iron ore (-6,4% and contributing -0,8 of a percentage point) and gold (-3,4% and contributing -0,5 of a percentage point) were the largest negative contributors.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3,0% in October 2024 compared with September 2024. This followed month-on-month changes of 4,5% in September 2024 and 3,3% in August 2024.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 4,0% in the three months ended October 2024 compared with the previous three months. The largest positive contributors were:

·        PGMs (8,5% and contributing 2,6 percentage points);

·        iron ore (3,1% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point); and

·        ‘other’ metallic minerals (17,0% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point).

Mineral sales: results for October 2024

Mineral sales at current prices increased by 1,6% year-on-year in October 2024. The largest positive contributors were:

·        coal (10,3% and contributing 2,5 percentage points);

·        gold (4,1% and contributing 0,9 of a percentage point);

·        ‘other’ metallic minerals (28,9% and contributing 0,6 of a percentage point);

·        chromium ore (7,4% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point); and

·        ‘other’ non-metallic minerals (11,2% and contributing 0,4 of a percentage point).

The largest negative contributor was iron ore (-30,0% and contributing -3,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 3,7% in October 2024 compared with September 2024. This followed month-on-month changes of 16,7% in September 2024 and -21,7% in August 2024.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 7,2% in the three months ended October 2024 compared with the previous three months.
