Production: results for September 2021

 

Mining production decreased by 3,4% year-on-year in September 2021. The largest negative contributors were:

·        coal (-8,9% and contributing -2,2 percentage points);

·        PGMs (-7,5% and contributing -1,7 percentage points); and

·        gold (-6,9% and contributing -0,9 of a percentage point).

 

Manganese ore (14,2% and contributing 1,2 percentage points) was a significant positive contributor.

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3,7% in September 2021 compared with August 2021. This followed month-on-month changes of -2,0% in August 2021 and 3,6% in July 2021.

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 0,6% in the third quarter of 2021 compared with the second quarter of 2021. The largest negative contributors were:

·        PGMs (-3,6% and contributing -0,8 of a percentage point);

·        coal (-3,5% and contributing -0,8 of a percentage point); and

·        ‘other’ metallic minerals (-17,0% and contributing -0,5 of a percentage point).

 

Mineral sales: results for September 2021

 

Mineral sales at current prices increased by 1,1% year-on-year in September 2021. The largest positive contributors were:

·        coal (25,5% and contributing 4,4 percentage points); and

·        PGMs (6,7% and contributing 2,5 percentage points).

 

Manganese ore (-28,4% and contributing -2,1 percentage points) and gold (-18,0% and contributing -1,8 percentage points) were significant negative contributors.

 

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 24,6% in September 2021 compared with August 2021. This followed month-on-month changes of 1,2% in August 2021 and -1,1% in July 2021.

 

In the third quarter of 2021 the seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices was 8,9% lower compared with the second quarter of 2021.
