Key findings regarding mining production

 

Mining production decreased by 6,3% year-on-year in October 2020. The largest negative contributors were:

·        iron ore (-26,5% and contributing -2,6 percentage points);

·        chromium ore (-31,4% and contributing -1,4 percentage points);

·        ‘other’ non-metallic minerals (-17,3% and contributing -1,2 percentage points); and

·        coal (-4,0% and contributing -1,0 percentage point).

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 0,3% in October 2020 compared with September 2020. This followed month-on-month changes of -1,0% in September 2020 and 6,0% in August 2020.

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 18,5% in the three months ended October 2020 compared with the previous three months. The largest contributors were:

·        PGMs (32,0% and contributing 6,7 percentage points);

·        iron ore (30,2% and contributing 2,3 percentage points);

·        gold (19,2% and contributing 2,3 percentage points);

·        ‘other’ non-metallic minerals (22,3% and contributing 1,5 percentage points); and

·        manganese ore (16,7% and contributing 1,5 percentage points).

 

Key findings regarding mineral sales

 

Mineral sales increased by 30,7% year-on-year in October 2020. The largest positive contributors were:

·        PGMs (75,7% and contributing 20,8 percentage points);

·        gold (66,1% and contributing 10,0 percentage points); and

·        iron ore (31,2% and contributing 2,8 percentage points).

 

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 2,5% in October 2020 compared with September 2020. This followed month-on-month changes of 4,4% in September 2020 and 13,1% in August 2020.

 

In the three months ended October 2020 the seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices was 35,1% higher compared with the previous three months.
