Key findings regarding mining production for September 2017

Mining production decreased by 0,9% year-on-year in September 2017. The largest negative contributors were PGMs (-8,3% and contributing -2,1 percentage points) and iron ore (-7,5% and contributing -1,0 percentage point). 'Other' non-metallic minerals (32,2% and contributing 1,3 percentage points) and manganese ore (35,8% and contributing 1,1 percentage points) were significant positive contributors.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 7,0% in September 2017 compared with August 2017. This followed month-on-month changes of 6,0% in August 2017 and 0,5% in July 2017.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 2,0% in the third quarter of 2017 compared with the previous quarter. PGMs was the largest positive contributor (contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Key findings regarding mineral sales for August 2017

Mineral sales increased by 18,2% year-on-year in August 2017. The main positive contributors were:

  • coal (16,1% and contributing 4,6 percentage points);
  • manganese ore (127,1% and contributing 3,9 percentage points);
  • gold (20,0% and contributing 3,3 percentage points); and
  • PGMs (10,3% and contributing 2,5 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 4,7% in August 2017 compared with July 2017. This followed month-on-month changes of 2,7% in July 2017 and -1,0% in June 2017.
