Key findings: P2041 - Mining: Production and sales, July 2017

Mining production increased by 0,9% year-on-year in July 2017. The largest positive contributors were:

  • manganese ore (19,3% and contributing 0,9 of a percentage point);
  • chromium ore (18,3% and contributing 0,7 of a percentage point);
  • diamonds (16,5% and contributing 0,7 of a percentage point);
  • gold (3,9% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point); and
  • 'other' non-metallic minerals (17,0% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point).

Iron ore and PGMs (each decreasing by 5,0% and contributing -1,0 percentage point) were significant negative contributors.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 0,1% in the three months ended July 2017 compared with the previous three months. Diamonds (contributing 1,2 percentage points) was the largest positive contributor and PGMs the largest negative contributor (contributing -1,6 percentage points).

Key findings regarding mineral sales for June 2017

Mineral sales decreased by 3,9% year-on-year in June 2017. The negative contributors were:

  • PGMs (-33,9% and contributing -9,9 percentage points);
  • gold (-14,6% and contributing -2,5 percentage points); and
  • iron ore (-4,5% and contributing -0,4 of a percentage point).

Manganese ore (95,4% and contributing 4,6 percentage points) was a significant positive contributor.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 1,4% in June 2017 compared with May 2017. This followed month-on-month changes of 1,6% in May 2017 and -2,3% in April 2017.
