Key findings: P2041 - Mining: Production and sales, June 2017

Mining production decreased by 0,8% year-on-year in June 2017. PGMs was the largest negative contributor ( 13,7% and contributing -3,0 percentage points). Diamonds (59,0% and contributing 1,6 percentage points) was a significant positive contributor.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 2,6% in June 2017 compared with May 2017. This followed month-on-month changes of 0,1% in May 2017 and -2,0% in April 2017.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 0,6% in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the first quarter of 2017. Manganese ore (contributing 1,1 percentage points) was the largest positive contributor and PGMs the largest negative contributor (contributing -1,7 percentage points).

Key findings regarding mineral sales for May 2017

Mineral sales decreased by 5,9% year-on-year in May 2017. The largest negative contributors were:


PGMs (-28,3% and contributing -7,9 percentage points);

  • gold (-16,8% and contributing -3,1 percentage points); and
  • iron ore (-9,5% and contributing -0,9 of a percentage point).

Coal (14,9% and contributing 3,4 percentage points) and chromium ore (54,5% and contributing 2,0 percentage points) were significant positive contributors.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 1,4% in May 2017 compared with April 2017. This followed month-on-month changes of -2,1% in April 2017 and 2,1% in March 2017.
