Key findings regarding mining production for May 2016

Mining production decreased by 4,4% year-on-year in May 2016. The main negative contributors were iron ore (-26,4% and contributing -4,9 percentage points) and manganese ore (-25,4% and contributing -1,8 percentage points). PGMs was a significant positive contributor (23,1% and contributing 3,9 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 2,5% in May 2016 compared with April 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of 2,2% in April 2016 and -2,1% in March 2016.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 0,6% in the three months ending May 2016 compared with the previous three months. Gold (contributing -1,1 percentage points) and iron ore (contributing -1,0 percentage point) were the largest negative contributors to the 0,6% decrease. PGMs was the largest positive contributor (contributing 3,0 percentage points).

Key findings regarding mineral sales for April 2016

Mineral sales decreased by 3,5% year-on-year in April 2016. The largest negative contributor to the decrease of 3,5% was PGMs (-30,9% and contributing -8,6 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 1,6% in April 2016 compared with March 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of -0,5% in March 2016 and 4,4% in February 2016.
