Key findings regarding mining production for June 2014

Mining production decreased by 5,7% year-on-year in June 2014. The largest negative growth rates were recorded for PGMs (-37,2%), ‘other’ non-metallic minerals (-5,8%) and chromium ore (-4,1%). The main contributor to the 5,7% decrease was PGMs (contributing -7,8 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 1,4% in June 2014 compared with May 2014. This followed month-on-month changes of -3,1% in May 2014 and 7,1% in April 2014.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased slightly by 0,1% in the second quarter of 2014 compared with the previous quarter. The main contributors to the 0,1% increase were manganese ore (contributing 1,1 percentage points), iron ore (contributing 1,0 percentage point) and coal (contributing 1,0 percentage point). PGMs was a significant negative contributor (contributing -3,5 percentage points).

Key findings regarding mineral sales for May 2014

Mineral sales increased by 1,9% year-on-year in May 2014. The highest positive growth rates were recorded for nickel (97,3%), chromium ore (35,7%) and ‘other’ non-metallic minerals (21,9%). The major contributors to the 1,9% increase were coal (contributing 2,2 percentage points), nickel (contributing 1,9 percentage points), ‘other’ non-metallic minerals (contributing 1,3 percentage points) and chromium ore (contributing 1,2 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 4,0% in May 2014 compared with April 2014. This followed month-on-month changes of -0,6% in April 2014 and -9,9% in March 2014.
