Key findings regarding mining production for May 2014

Mining production decreased by 6,5% year-on-year in May 2014. The largest negative growth rates were recorded for PGMs (-48,5%), 'other' non-metallic minerals (-13,3%) and building materials (-11,7%). The main contributor to the 6,5% decrease was PGMs (contributing -10,4 percentage points). Iron ore was a significant positive contributor (contributing 3,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3,1% in May 2014 compared with April 2014. This followed month-on-month changes of 6,3% in April 2014 and -1,5% in March 2014.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 5,6% in the three months ended May 2014 compared with the previous three months. The main contributor to the 5,6% decrease was PGMs (contributing -7,2 percentage points).

Key findings regarding mineral sales for April 2014

Mineral sales decreased by 1,3% year-on-year in April 2014. The largest negative growth rates were recorded for 'other' metallic minerals (-43,6%), 'other' non-metallic minerals (-28,0%) and gold (-13,8%). The major contributors to the 1,3% decrease were gold (contributing -2,2 percentage points), 'other' non-metallic minerals (contributing -1,9 percentage points), coal (contributing -1,8 percentage points) and 'other' metallic minerals (contributing -1,4 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 0,3% in April 2014 compared with March 2014. This followed month-on-month changes of -10,1% in March 2014 and 4,4% in February 2014.
