Key findings regarding mining production for September 2013

Mining production increased by 0,6% year-on-year in September 2013. The highest positive growth rates were recorded for copper (187,4%), chromium ore (46,3%) and manganese ore (42,1%). The main contributors to the 0,6% increase were manganese ore (contributing 1,7 percentage points), PGMs (contributing 1,2 percentage points) and chromium ore (contributing 1,0 percentage point). Iron ore (contributing -3,8 percentage points) was a significant negative contributor.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 4,1% in September 2013 compared with August 2013. This followed month-on-month changes of -1,6% in August 2013 and 3,6% in July 2013.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 1,4% in the third quarter of 2013 compared with the previous quarter. The main contributor to the 1,4% increase was PGMs (contributing 3,0 percentage points).

Key findings regarding mineral sales for August 2013

Mineral sales increased by 7,6% year-on-year in August 2013. The highest positive growth rates were recorded for iron ore (68,9%), chromium ore (47,7%) and copper (47,0%). The major contributors to the 7,6% increase were iron ore (contributing 7,2 percentage points) and PGMs (contributing 7,1 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 7,0% in August 2013 compared with July 2013. This followed month-on-month changes of 2,7% in July 2013 and 4,9% in June 2013.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 1,7% in the three months ended August 2013 compared with the previous three months. This increase was largely driven by the sales value of iron ore (contributing 2,3 percentage points) and PGMs (contributing 2,1 percentage points).
