Key findings: P2041 - Mining: Production and sales, June 2008

The total mining production for the second quarter of 2008, after seasonal adjustment, increased by 7,7% compared with the first quarter of 2008. This increase of 7,7% was due to increases of 8,2% in the production of non-gold minerals and 4,2% in the production of gold. The production of platinum group metals (PGMs) contributed 4,4 percentage points while diamonds contributed 1,5 percentage points to the 7,7% increase. Nickel was the only significant negative contributor (-0,1 of a percentage point) to the quarterly change in total mining production.
The total seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices for the three months ended May 2008 reflected an increase of 23,8% compared with the previous three months. This increase of 23,8% (R15 271,7 million) can be attributed to an increase of 26,1% (R2 469,2 million) in the sale of gold and 23,5% (R12 802,5 million) in the sale of non-gold minerals.
