Key findings: P2041 - Mining: Production and sales, November 2007

Shaft closures due to safety concerns affected mining production in both October and November. The impact was mostly felt in the platinum group metal (PGM) sector in October when production, after seasonal adjustment, dropped by 7,6% from September to be followed by a 6,3% rise in November from October. Gold mining was mostly affected in November, when production fell by 8,1% from October after seasonal adjustment.
The total seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices for the three months ended October 2007 reflected a decrease of 4,9% compared with the previous three months. This decrease of 4,9% (R2 754,8 million) can be attributed to a decrease of 8,5% (R867,9 million) in the sales of gold and a decrease of 4,1% (R1 886,9 million) in the sales of non-gold minerals.
