Total income

Total income earned in the agriculture and related services industry was R370,7 billion in 2020 compared with R356,8 billion in 2019. The total income figures reflect an increase of 3,9% between 2019 and 2020. In 2020, ‘animals and animal products’ generated the largest sales (R151,8 billion), followed by ‘horticultural crops and products’ (R91,4 billion) and ‘field crops’ (R65,0 billion). The highest percentage increase was recorded for income earned from the sale of ‘animals and animal products’ (2,8%), followed by ‘field crops’ (2,2%) and ‘horticultural crops and products’ (0,2%).

Concentration ratios

In 2020, the 100 largest enterprises (in terms of total income) in the agriculture and related services industry contributed 26,4% of total income. Between 2019 and 2020 the concentration ratios decreased in the 5, 10 and 50 categories, but increased for the top 20 and 100 largest enterprises.

Income by enterprise size

Large enterprises contributed 64,9% or R240,6 billion of the total income in 2020, followed by small enterprises with a contribution of 20,4% or R75,7 billion. Micro enterprises and medium enterprises contributed 7,9% and 6,8% respectively.

Total expenditure

Total expenditure incurred by the farming sector in 2020 was R353,6 billion compared with R334,8 billion in 2019 (an increase of 5,6%). The highest contributor to total expenditure was ‘purchases’ (52,3% of the total), followed by ‘salaries and wages’ (13,0%), ‘repairs and maintenance’ (4,6%) and ‘depreciation’ (4,5%).

Capital expenditure

The total capital expenditure on new assets in the agriculture and related services industry in 2020 amounted to R26,6 billion compared with R23,5 billion in 2019, an increase of 13,3%. ‘Land and buildings’ reported the largest increase, namely R2,3 billion (from R5,8 billion to R8,1 billion).

Employment

The total number of persons employed in the agriculture and related services industry as at the end of June 2020 was 777 879 compared with 765 269 in June 2019, an increase of 1,6%.
