Total income

Total income earned by the farming sector was R243 780 million in 2015 compared with R216 669 million in 2014. The total income figures reflect growth of 12,5% between 2014 and 2015. 'Animals and animal products' generated the largest sales (R109 490 million), followed by 'horticultural crops and products' (R52 610 million) and 'field crops' (R50 761 million).The highest percentage increase was recorded for income earned from the sale of 'animals and animal products' (16,4%), followed by 'field crops' (11,8%) and 'horticultural crops and products' (10,3%).


Total expenditure

Total expenditure incurred by the farming sector for 2015 was R225 522 million compared with R206 047 million in 2014. The major contributors to the total expenditure were 'purchases'
(R121 697 million or 54,1%), followed by 'salaries and wages' (R27 242 million or 12,1%), 'repairs and  maintenance' (R12 712 million or 5,6%),'depreciation' (R10 594 million or 4,7%) and 'interest' (R6 557 million or 2,9%). Among the major contributors, the highest percentage increases were recorded for 'repairs and maintenance' (18,1%), 'interest' (14,7%) and 'salaries and wages' (14,0%).

Capital expenditure

Total capital expenditure in the farming sector amounted to R20 981 million in 2015 compared with R19 798 million in 2014, an increase of 6,0%.
