Key findings: P0352.1 - Domestic tourism survey (DTS), October 2024

Domestic Tourism Survey (DTS) 2023 indicated that there was a total of 32,2 million day trips and 25,8 million overnight trips. The total expenditure incurred on domestic trips was about R57,9 billion which constituted day trips spending of about R20,2 billion and overnight trips spending of R37,6 billion. Total expenditure was mostly driven by shopping (R18,6 billion) followed by domestic transport (R17,9 billion). The least amount of money was spent on recreation and culture.

Gauteng (22,0%) was the main province of destination, followed by Western Cape (21,5%) and Limpopo (13,8%) for day travellers. Most tourists visited Western Cape (15,9%) followed by Limpopo (15,6%) and KwaZulu-Natal (15,2%).

Shopping was the most common reason indicated for undertaking day trips (32,6%), followed by visiting friends and relatives at (22,5%) while tourists were more likely to undertake overnight trips to visit friends and relatives and for leisure purposes. Day and overnight trips within the country were mostly undertaken by cars and taxis as a mode of transport.
