Temporary residence permits (TRP)

In 2015, 75 076 temporary residence permits were approved. These permits were made up of:
• 23 138 (30,8%) visitors,
• 22 541 (30,0%) relatives,
• 12 998 (17,3%) study,
• 12 354 (16,5%) work,
• 1 143 (1,5%) waiver,
• 949 (1,3%) medical treatment,
• 905 (1,2%) business,
• 875 (1,2%) retired persons,
• 136 (0,2%) treaty and
• 37 (0,05%) exchange.

About two thirds (67,3%) of the TRP recipients came from the following ten countries: Nigeria, Zimbabwe, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, UK, DRC, Germany and Angola.
The median age of TRP recipients was 32 years.

Permanent residence permits (PRP)
A total of 6 397 permanent residence permits were approved.
The six category statuses used to apply for the permit were:
• 4 354 (68,1%) Work,
• 1 327 (20,7%) Relatives,
• 356 (5,6%) Business,
• 204 (3,2%) Refugee,
• 117 (1,8%) Retired persons, and
• 39 (0,6%) Waiver
Over two thirds (68,1%) of the issued permits were acquired using the work category status.
The top ten countries in terms of PRP recipients were Zimbabwe, India, China, Nigeria, DRC, UK, Pakistan, Ghana, Germany and Lesotho. Nationals from these countries made up around three quarters (76,0%) of the 6 397 recipients.
The median age of PRP recipients was 38 years.
