Key findings: P0351.4 - Documented Immigrants in South Africa , 2014

In 2014 69 216 temporary permits were approved. Ten types of permits were issued: Visitors (21 350); Work (18 184); Relatives (14 918); Study (11 208); Business (2 003); Waiver (811); Retired persons (978); Medical (159); Treaty (43); Exchange (36). Most of the recipients came from the Africa region (52,6%) and the rest from the overseas region (47,4%). The following ten leading countries received 66,7% of the permits. They were: Zimbabwe, India, Nigeria, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, UK, Lesotho, DRC and Angola. The median age of all the recipients of the temporary residence permits was 31 years.


A total of 4 136 permanent permits were approved. Five category statuses were used to apply for the permit: Relatives: (2 613); Work (1 228); Refugee (164); Retired persons (90); and Business (41). More recipients came from the Africa region (63,8%) than from the overseas region (36,2%). The following ten leading countries received 77,4% of the permits. These were: Zimbabwe, India, China, DRC, Nigeria, UK, Lesotho, Pakistan, Germany and Zambia. The median age of all the recipients of the permanent residence permits was 32 years
