Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, March 2019

In March 2019, 3 574 084 travellers (arrivals, departures, and transits) passed through South Africa's ports of entry. They were made up of 1 003 575 South African residents AND 2 570 509 FOREIGN travellers.

FOREIGN arrivals, 1 301 855 were made up of 83 638 non-visitors AND 1 218 217 visitors.

The visitors were broken down AS follows:

  • 379 521 who arrived AND departed ON the same DAY, AND
  • 838 696 who stayed overnight (tourists).

Tourists dropped BY 5,0% FROM 882 749 IN March 2018.

The tourists were constituted AS follows:

  • Overseas tourists (236 647), who decreased BY 9,2% FROM 260 514 IN March 2018. Despite the overall decrease, tourism FOR SPECIFIC countries increased
    • The highest increase, 19,8% was FOR tourists FROM Brazil (who increased FROM 5 363 IN March 2018 TO 6 423 IN March 2019), followed BY those FROM China, who increased BY 9,2% (FROM 7 029 IN March 2018 TO 7 679 IN March 2019).
  • Tourists FROM SADC (587 189), who decreased BY 3,2% FROM 606 898 IN March 2018. Despite the overall decrease, tourism FOR SPECIFIC countries increased
    • The highest increase, 4,9% was FOR tourists FROM Zimbabwe (who increased FROM 160 249 IN March 2018 TO 168 117 IN March 2019), followed BY those FROM Angola, who increased BY 3,3% (FROM 5 427 IN March 2018 TO 5 608 IN March 2019).
  • Tourists FROM 'other' African countries (13 519), who decreased BY 4,6% FROM 14 165 IN March 2018. Despite the overall decrease, tourism FOR SPECIFIC countries increased.
    • The highest increase, 22,0% was FOR tourists FROM Uganda (who increased FROM 1 001 IN March 2018 TO 1 221 IN March 2019) , followed closely BY those FROM Kenya, who increased BY 20,1% (FROM 2 104 IN March 2018 TO 2 526 IN March 2019).
  • 1 341 (0,2%) tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.

The majority of tourists, 565 869 (67,5%) used road transport AND 270 321 (32,2%) used air transport, WHILE a smaller number, 2 506 (0,3%) used sea transport.

The majority of tourists, 814 046 (97,1%) were ON holiday compared TO 19 473 (2,3%); 4 676 (0,6%) AND 501 (0,1%) who were IN South Africa FOR business, study purposes AND FOR medical treatment respectively. Tourists were made up of 471 372 (56,2%) males AND 367 324 (43,8%) females.
