Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, November 2018

In November 2018, 3 504 147 travellers (arrivals, departures and transits) passed through South Africa's ports of entry. They were made up of 892 799 South African residents and 2 611 348 foreign travellers.

Foreign arrivals, 1 341 316 were made up of 78 770 non-visitors and 1 262 546 visitors.

The visitors were broken down as follows:

  • 387 374 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
  • 875 172 who stayed overnight (tourists).

Tourists increased by 3,1% from 848 966 in November 2017.

They were constituted as follows:

  • Overseas tourists (256 537), who decreased by 1,3% from 259 805 in November 2017. Despite the overall decrease, tourism for specific countries increased.
    • The highest increase, 25,6% was for tourists from India (from 7 418 in November 2017 to 9 315 in November 2018), followed by those from Australia , who increased by 11,8% (from 7 284 in November 2017 to 8 143 in November 2018).
  • Tourists from SADC (600 507), who increased by 4,8% from 572 896 in November 2017.
    • The highest increase, 40,5% was for tourists from Angola (from 3 667 in November 2017 to 5 151 in November 2018), followed by those from Malawi, who increased by 16,4% (from 15 381 in November 2017 to 17 911 in November 2018).
  • Tourists from 'other' African countries (16 569), who increased by 10,2% from 15 035 in November 2017.
    • The highest increase, 44,2% was for tourists from Cote d'Ivoire (from 199 in November 2017 to 287 in November 2018) , followed by those from Nigeria, who increased by 24,7% (from 4 291 in November 2017 to 5 353 in November 2018).
  • 1 559 tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.

The majority of tourists, 582 801 (66,6%) used road transport and 289 607 (33,1%) used air transport, while a smaller number, 2 764 (0,3%) used sea transport.

The majority of tourists, 845 422 (96,6%) were on holiday compared to 26 075 (3,0%); 3 046 (0,3%) and 629 (0,1%) who were in South Africa for business, study purposes and for medical treatment respectively. Tourists were made up of 483 988 (55,3%) males and 391 184 (44,7%) females.
