Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, April 2019

In April 2019, 3 632 618 travellers (arrivals, departures, and transits) passed through South Africa's ports of entry. They were made up of 1 000 776 South African residents and 2 631 842 foreign travellers.

Foreign arrivals, 1 350 167 were made up of 90 205 non-visitors and 1 259 962 visitors.

The visitors were broken down as follows:

  •  356 903 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
  •  903 059 who stayed overnight (tourists).

Tourists increased by 4,2% from 866 894 in April 2018.

The tourists were constituted as follows:

  •   Overseas tourists (217 131), who increased by 11,9% from 194 017 in April 2018.
    • The highest increase, 30,2% was for tourists from Germany (who increased from 19 827 in April 2018 to 25 823 in April 2019), followed by those from UK, who increased by 25,6% (from 31 641 in April 2018 to 39 755 in April 2019).

  •   Tourists from SADC (671 079), who increased by 2,1% from 657 020 in April 2018.
    •  The highest increase, 50,2% was for tourists from Botswana (who increased from 50 536 in April 2018 to 75 903 in April 2019), followed by those from Namibia, who increased by 16,4% (from 17 214 in April 2018 to 20 030 in April 2019).

  • Tourists from ?other' African countries (13 732), who decreased by 7,3% from 14 814 in April 2018. Despite the overall decrease, tourism for specific countries increased.
    •  The highest increase, 61,4% was for tourists from Egypt (who increased from 599 in April 2018 to 967 in April 2019) , followed by those from Morocco, who increased by 16,2% (from 185 in April 2018 to 215 in April 2019).

  •   1 117 (0,1%) tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.

The majority of tourists, 648 358 (71,8%) used road transport and 251 938 (27,9%) used air transport, while a smaller number, 2 763 (0,3%) used sea transport.

The majority of tourists, 881 530 (97,6%) were on holiday[1] compared to 15 583 (1,7%); 5 472 (0,6%) and 474 (0,1%) who were in South Africa for business, study purposes and for medical treatment respectively. Tourists were made up of 492 705 (54,6%) males and 410 354 (45,4%) females.
