Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, July 2018

In July 2018, 3 562 603 travellers (arrivals, departures and transits) passed through South Africa’s ports of entry. They were made up of 1 085 384 South African residents and 2 477 219 foreign travellers.
Foreign arrivals, 1 303 293 were made up of 80 068 non-visitors and 1 223 225 visitors.
The visitors were broken down as follows:
• 367 319 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
• 855 906 who stayed overnight (tourists).
Tourists decreased by 0,7% from 861 731 in July 2017.
They were constituted as follows:
• Overseas tourists (206 076), who decreased by 0,3% from 206 737 in July 2017.
o The highest increase, 35,9% was for tourists from China (from 7 137 in July 2017 to 9 697 in July 2018), followed by Brazil, 12,9% (from 6 092 in July 2017 to 6 880 in July 2018).

• Tourists from SADC (633 740), who decreased by 1,0% from 640 193 in July 2017.
o The highest increase, 22,8% was for tourists from Angola (from 3 474 in July 2017 to 4 266 in July 2018), followed by DRC, 22,6% (from 3 059 in July 2017 to 3 751 in July 2018).

• Tourists from ‘other’ African countries (15 065), who increased by 9,2% from 13 792 in July 2017.
o The highest increase, 43,0% was for tourists from Côte D’Ivoire (from 200 in July 2017 to 286 in July 2018) , followed by Cameroon, 32,0% (from 406 in July 2017 to 536 in July 2018).

• 1 025 tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.
About 613 706 (71,7%) of tourists used road transport and 242 182 (28,3%) used air transport, while a smaller number, 18 ( less than 0,1%) used sea transport.
The majority of tourists, 823 725 (96,2%) were on holiday  compared to 19 879 (2,3%); 11 769 (1,4%) and 533 (0,1%) who were in South Africa for business, study purposes and for medical treatment respectively. Tourists were made up of 470 991 (55,0%) males and 384 915 (45,0%) females.
