Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, June 2018

In June 2018, 3 246 696 travellers (arrivals, departures and transits) passed through South Africa's ports of entry. They were made up of 965 403 South African residents and 2 281 293 foreign travellers.

The foreign arrivals, 1 160 094 were made up of 69 850 non-visitors and 1 090 244 visitors.

The visitors were broken down as follows:

  • 360 870 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
  • 729 374 who stayed overnight (tourists).

Tourists increased by 2,9% from 708 978 in June 2017.

They were constituted as follows:

  • Overseas tourists (149 791), who decreased by 1,3% from 151 736 in June 2017.
    • Among the top ten countries, the largest increase, 9,2% was for tourists from China (from 6 019 in June 2017 to 6 572 in June 2018), followed by the UK, 3,3% (from 19 072 in June 2017 to 19 694 in June 2018).
  • Tourists from SADC (566 336), who increased by 3,9% from 544 900 in June 2017.
    • Among the top ten countries, the largest increase, 22,6% was for tourists from Angola (from 2 813 in June 2017 to 3 450 in June 2018), followed by Malawi, 10,0% (from 12 875 in June 2017 to 14 164 in June 2018).
  • Tourists from 'other' African countries (12 173), who increased by 6,9% from 11 387 in June 2017.
    • Among the top ten countries, the largest increase, 95,1% was for tourists from The Sudan (from 102 in June 2017 to 199 in June 2018) , followed by Ghana, 38,6% (from 1 110 in June 2017 to 1 539 in June 2018).
  • 1 074 tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.

About 545 905 (74,8%) of tourists used road transport and 183 428 (25,1%) used air transport, while a smaller number, 41 ( less than 0,1%) used sea transport.

The majority of tourists, 706 104 (96,8%) were on holiday compared to 19 352 (2,7%); 3 445 (0,5%) and 473 (0,1%) who were in South Africa for business, study purposes and for medical treatment respectively. Tourists were made up of 408 590 (56,0%) males and 320 784 (44,0%) females.
