Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, May 2018

In May 2018, 3 190 914 travellers (arrivals, departures and transits) passed through South Africa's ports of entry. They were made up of 857 349 South African residents and 2 333 565 foreign travellers.

Foreign arrivals, 1 196 107 were made up of 77 559 non-visitors and 1 118 548 visitors.

The visitors were broken down as follows:

  • 351 218 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
  • 767 330 who stayed overnight (tourists).

Tourists increased by 0,04% from 767 059 in May 2017.

They were constituted as follows:

  • Overseas tourists (165 137), who decreased by 3,7% from 171 417 in May 2017.
    • The highest increase, 9,2% was for tourists from Brazil (from 4 754 in May 2017 to 5 189 in May2018), followed by France, 1,8% (from 12 093 in May 2017 to 12 833 in May 2018).
  • Tourists from SADC (587 531), who increased by 1,1% from 580 982 in May 2017.
    • The highest increase, 39,2% was for tourists from Angola (from 3 624 in May 2017 to 5 044 in May 2018), followed by Malawi, 12,2% (from 12 904 in May 2017 to 14 477 in May 2018).
  • Tourists from 'other' African countries (13 455), who decreased by 1,2% from 13 615 in May 2017.
    • The highest increase, 23,7% was for tourists from Ghana (from 1 493 in May 2017 to 1 847 in May 2018) , followed closely by Morocco, 23,3% (from 159 in May 2017 to 196 in May 2018).
  • 1 207 tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.

About 567 307 (73,9%) of tourists used road transport and 199 996 (26,1%) used air transport, while a smaller number, 27 ( less than 0,1%) used sea transport.

The majority of tourists, 741 884 (96,7%) were on holiday compared to 20 266 (2,6%); 4 564 (0,6%) and 616 (0,1%) who were in South Africa for business, study purposes and for medical treatment respectively. Tourists were made up of 437 400 (57,0%) males and 329 930 (43,0%) females.
