Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, November 2017

In November 2017, 3 441 487 travellers (arrivals, departures and transits) passed through South Africa's ports of entry. They were made up of 830 885 South African residents and 2 610 602 foreign travellers.

Foreign arrivals, 1 329 025 were made up of 83 233 non-visitors and 1 245 792 visitors.

The visitors were broken down as follows:

  • 396 826 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
  • 848 966 who stayed overnight (tourists).
Tourists increased by 4,9% from 809 349 in November 2016.

  • Overseas tourists (259 805), who increased by 3,9% from 250 017 in November 2016.
    • The highest increase, 14,5% was for tourists from France (from 19 531 November 2016 to 22 354 in November 2017), followed by Germany, 7,2% (from 42 4489 in November 2016 to 45 558 in November 2017).
  • Tourists from SADC (572 896), who increased by 5,7% from 542 058 in November 2016.
    • The highest increase, 16,2% was for tourists from Mozambique (from 97 108 in November 2016 to 112 832 in November 2017), followed by Malawi, 10,4 (from 13 937 in November 2016 to 15 381 in November 2017).
  • Tourists from 'other' African countries (15 035), who decreased by 6,8% from 16 135 in November 2016.
    • The highest increase, 10,7% was for tourists from Senegal (from 262 in November 2016 to 290 in November 2017) , followed by Egypt, 8,8% (from 784 in November 2016 to 853 in November 2017).
  • 1 230 tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.

About two third, 565 701 (66,6%) of tourists used road transport and about one third, 282 423 (33,3%) used air transport, while a smaller number, 842 (0,1%) used sea transport.

The majority of tourists, 817 319 (96,3%) were on holiday compared to 28 421 (3,3%) and 3 226 (0,4%) who came for business and for study purposes respectively. Tourists were made up of 476 471 (56,1%) males and 372 495 (43,9%) females.
