Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, April 2017

In April 2017, 3 841 519 (arrivals, departures and transits) passed through South Africa’s ports of entry. They were made up of 1 068 065 South African residents and 2 773 454 foreign travellers. Foreign arrivals, 1 395 241 were made up of 85 768 non-visitors and 1 309 473 visitors.
The visitors were broken down as follows:

  • 390 389 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
  • 919 084 who stayed overnight (tourists).
Tourists increased by 15,5% from 795 919 in April 2016.
They were constituted as follows:
  • Overseas tourists (222 055), who increased by 17,8% from 188 491 in April 2016.
    • The highest increase, 50,5% was for tourists from Germany (18 423 in April 2016 to 27 720 in April 2017), followed by Switzerland, 29,6% (from 4 320 in April 2016 to 5 600 in April 2017).
  • Tourists from SADC (680 918), who increased by 15,3% from 590 456 in April 2016.
    • The highest increase, 54,3% was for tourists from Botswana (from 52 875 in April 2016 to 81 570 in April 2017), followed by Lesotho, 20,4% (from 132 161 in April 2016 to 159 175 in April 2017).
  • Tourists from ‘other’ African countries (15 052), who decreased by 5,9% from 15 996 in April 2016
    • The highest increase, 14,0% was for tourists from Uganda (from 983 in April 2016 to 1 121 in April 2017, followed by Ghana, 12,5% (from 1 316 in April 2016 to 1 480 in April 2017).
  • 1 003 tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.
About three quarters, 666 427 (72,5%) of tourists used road transport and about one quarter, 250 720 (27,3%) used air transport, while a smaller number, 1 937 (0,2%) used sea transport.
The majority of tourists, 895 760 (97,5%) were on holiday compared to 16 533 (1,8%) and 6 791 (0,7%) who came for business and for study purposes respectively. Tourists were made up of 496 984 (54,1%) males and 422 100 (45,9%) females.
