Key findings: P0351 - Tourism and Migration, June 2016

In June 2016, 3 212 429 travellers (arrivals, departures and transits) passed through South Africa’s ports of entry. They were made up of 889 728 South African residents and 2 322 701 foreign travellers.
Foreign arrivals, 1 175 811 were made up of 74 689 non-visitors and 1 101 122 visitors.
The visitors were broken down as follows:

  • 409 708 who arrived and departed on the same day, and
  • 691 414 who stayed overnight (tourists).


Tourists increased by 13,3% from 610 092 in June 2015.


They were constituted as follows:

  • Overseas tourists, who increased by 19,4% from 113 689 in June 2015.
    • The highest increase, 97,9% was for tourists from China (from 4 167 in June 2015 to 8 247 in June 2016), followed by India, 40,3% (from 6 577 in June 2015 to 9 228 in June 2016).

 

  • Tourists from SADC, who increased by 12,2% from 482 523 in June 2015.
    • The highest increase, 38,4% was for tourists from Lesotho (from 102 880 in June 2015 to 142 402 in June 2016), followed by Botswana, 21,1% (from 39 707 in June 2015 to 48 076 in June 2016).

 

  • Tourists from 'other' African countries, who increased by 7,4% from 12 620 in June 2015.
    • The highest increase, 54,8% was for tourists from Gabon (from 314 in June 2015 to 486 in June 2016, followed by Uganda, 33,9% (from 723 in June 2015 to 968 in June 2016).

 

  • 823 tourists, whose country of origin were unspecified.

About three-quarters (525 442) of tourists used road transport and nearly quarter (165 752) used air transport, while a much smaller number, 220 (0,03%) used sea transport.


The majority of tourists, 666 433 (96,4%) were on holiday compared to 21 110 (3,1%) and 3 871 (0,6%) who came for business and for study purposes respectively.


Tourists were made up of 388 684 (56,2%) males and 302 730 (43,8%) females.
