IMPROVING LIVES THROUGH DATA ECOSYSTEMS

This statistical release presents information on mortality and causes of death in South Africa, based on all death notification forms received from the Department of Home Affairs for deaths that occurred in 2006. The release outlines trends in mortality from 1997 and provides information on differentials in mortality. It also highlights patterns of causes of death in South Africa.

The results indicate that mortality continues to increase in the country. More deaths occurred in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, and the lowest in Northern Cape. The age pattern at death has remained more or less the same between 2002 and 2006, with more deaths observed at age group 0
