Key findings: P0305 - Recorded live births, 2014

The total number of registered births continues to drop. A total of 1 161 159 live births were registered at the Department of Home Affairs in 2014. This represents a decline of 0,5% as compared to 1 166 544 births that were registered in 2013. Of the 1 161 159 live births registered, 886 202 (76.3%) were current birth registrations indicating an increase of 2,5% when compared to 73.8% (860 393) current birth registrations for 2013. In 2014, only 274 957 (23.7%) were late registrations for births that occurred in previous years. Overall, there were slightly more male (587 592) than female (573 567) births born and registered in 2014. Most of these births were from women aged 20–29 years; occurred in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng; and were born during the month of September. The completeness of 2014 births registered within the year of birth was estimated at 89,2%.
