Key findings: P0305 - Recorded live births, 2013

In 2013, 1 166 544 live births were registered at the Department of Home Affairs. This number represents a decrease of 0,2% from a total of 1 168 403 births registered in 2012. A total of 860 393 births that occurred in 2012 were registered within the year of birth, representing 73,8% of births registered in the current year. This is a slight decline from 79,3% of current births registered in 2012. Completeness of birth registration for the intercensal period 2007-2011 was estimated at 89,2%, which was an increase from 86,3% observed for 2001–2007. Overall, there were slightly more male than female children born and registered in 2013. Most of these children were born to women aged 20–29 years; occurred in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal; and were born during the month of March.
