Key findings: P0305 - Recorded live births, 2009

In 2009, 1 254 707 live births were registered at the Department of Home Affairs. This represents a decrease of 1,8% from a total of 1 277 763 births registered in 2008. KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng had the highest number of registered births. A total of 879 707 births occurred in 2009 and were registered within the year of their occurrence. This represents a decrease of 3,9% from 2008 in which births that were registered within the year of their occurrence were 915 674.  A total of 375 000 births were registered later than the year of birth. The completeness of 2009 births registered within the year of birth was 85,4%.
