Key findings: P0305 - Recorded live births, 2006
In 2006, a total of 1 346 119 live births were registered at the Department of Home Affairs. This represents a decrease of 2,5% from a total of 1 380 496 births registered in 2005. KwaZulu Natal and Eastern Cape had the highest number of registered births, although these provinces also had the highest proportion of births registered late. A total of 860 263 of births that occurred in 2006 were registered, representing an increase of 8,4% from the 793 788 births that occurred and were registered in 2005. Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal recorded the highest number of births in 2006.
