Key findings: P0277 - Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES), June 2024

Total employment increased by 42 000 or 0,4% quarter-on-quarter, from 10 674 000 in March 2024 to 10 716 000 in June 2024. This was largely due to an increase in Community Services industry with 92 000 or 3,1%. However, there was a decrease in the following industries: Manufacturing (-16 000 or -1,2%), Business services (-14 000 or -0,6%), Mining (-7 000 or -1,5%), Transport (-7 000 or -1,4%), Trade (-5 000 or -0,2%) and Construction (-1 000 or -0,2%). Electricity industry showed no change.

 

Total employment decreased by 144 000 or 1,3% year-on-year between June 2023 and June 2024.

 

Full-time employment decreased by 39 000 or 0,4% quarter-on-quarter, from 9 488 000 in March 2024 to 9 449 000 in June 2024. This was largely due to a decrease in the following industries: Manufacturing (-17 000 or -1,4%), Mining (-7 000 or -1,5%), Transport (-7 000 or -1,5%), Trade (-5 000 or -0,2%), Business Services (-5 000 or -0,2%) and Community Services (-2 000 or -0,1%). However, there was an increase in the construction industry (4 000 or 0,8%). Electricity industry showed no change. 

 

Full-time employment decreased by 40 000 or 0,4% year-on-year between June 2023 and June 2024.

 

Part-time employment increased by 81 000 or 6,8% quarter-on-quarter, from 1 186 000 in March 2024 to 1 267 000 in June 2024. This was largely due to an increase of 94 000 or 17,5% in Community Services and 1 000 or 1,2% in Manufacturing industry. However, there was a decrease in the following industries: Business Services (-9 000 or -4,0%) and Construction (-5 000 or -6,9%). The Electricity, Trade and Transport industry showed no change in part-time employment.

 

Part-time employment decreased by 104 000 or 7,6% year-on-year between June 2023 and June 2024.

 

Gross earnings paid to employees decreased by R4,6 billion or 0,5% from R957,0 billion in March 2024 to R952,4 billion in June 2024. This was largely due to a decrease in the following industries: Business services and Electricity. However, there was an increase in the following industries: Community Services, Trade, Construction, Transport, Manufacturing and Mining.

 

The year-on-year Gross earnings increased by R35,4 billion or 3,9% between June 2023 and June 2024.

Basic salary/wages paid to employees increased by R21,8 billion or 2,6% from R848,0 billion in March 2024 to R869,7 billion in June 2024. This was largely due to an increase in the following industries: Community services, Business services, Trade, Manufacturing, Transport, Construction and Mining. However, there was a decrease in the Electricity industry.

 

The year-on-year Basic salary/wages increased by R36,8 billion or 4,4% between June 2023 and June 2024.

 

Bonus paid to employees decreased by R27,5 billion or 34% from R81,5 billion in March 2024 to R54,0 billion in June 2024. This was largely due to a decrease in the following industries: Business services, Community services, Manufacturing and Electricity. However, there was an increase in the following industries: Trade, Transport and Construction.

 

The year-on-year Bonus payments decreased by R3,2 billion or 5,7% between June 2023 and June 2024.

 

Overtime paid to employees increased by R1,2 billion or 4,2% from R27,5 billion in March 2024 to R28,7 billion in June 2024. This was largely due to an increase in the following industries: Community Services, Business Services, Construction, Manufacturing, Trade and Electricity. However, there was a decrease in the Transport industry.

 

The year-on-year overtime payments increased by R1,8 billion or 6,9% between June 2023 and June 2024.

Average monthly earnings paid to employees increased by 2,5% from R26 783 in February 2024 to R27 450 in May 2024. Year-on-year, average monthly earnings paid to employees increased by 4,8% between May 2023 and May 2024.
