Key findings: P0277 - Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES), December 2014

The number of employees in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy increased from an estimated 8 947 000 employees in September 2014 to an estimated 8 989 000 employees in December 2014.
 
The December 2014 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that an estimated 8 989 000 persons were employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy. This reflected a quarterly increase of 42 000 employees (+0,5%) between September 2014 and December 2014 and an annual decrease of
20 000 employees (-0,2%) between December 2013 and December 2014.

Gross earnings increased between the quarters ended September 2014 and December 2014.

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector during the quarter ended December 2014 amounted to R499 billion. This reflected a quarterly increase of R34,6 billion (+7,4%) compared with the quarter ended September 2014 and an annual increase of R35 billion (+7,6%) compared with the quarter ended December 2013.

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased by 0,6% between August 2014 and November 2014.

The December 2014 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that an estimated monthly average of R16 470 was paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector during November 2014. This reflected a quarterly increase of 0,6% between August 2014 and November 2014 and an annual increase of 6,9% between November 2013 and November 2014.
