Key findings: P0277 - Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES), June 2014

The number of employees in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy increased from an estimated 8 511 000 employees in March 2014 to an estimated 8 666 000 employees in June 2014.

The June 2014 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that an estimated 8 666 000 persons were employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy. This reflected a quarterly increase of about 155 000 employees (+1,8%) between March 2014 and June 2014 and an annual increase of 229 000 employees (+2,7%) between June 2013 and June 2014.

Gross earnings increased between the quarters ended March 2014 and June 2014.

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector during the quarter ended June 2014 amounted to R408 888 million. This reflected a quarterly increase of R3 985 million (+1,0%) compared with the quarter ended March 2014 and an annual increase of R24 127 million (+6,3%) compared with the quarter ended June 2013.

Key findings regarding average monthly earnings for the month of May 2014
 
Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased by 3,0% between February 2014 and May 2014.

The June 2014 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that an estimated monthly average of
R15 169 was paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector during May 2014. This reflected a quarterly increase of 3,0% between February 2014 and May 2014 and an annual increase of 4,6% between May 2013 and May 2014.
