Key findings: P0277 - Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES), September 2012

Employment in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between the quarters ended June 2012 and September 2012.

The September 2012 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey shows that the number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy increased by about 10 000 persons (+0,1%) from
June 2012 (an estimated 8 430 000 employees) to September 2012 (an estimated 8 440 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between the quarters ended June 2012 and September 2012.

The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended September 2012 (July 2012 to September 2012) amounted to R369 881 million. This reflects a quarterly increase of R17 442 million (+4,9%) compared with the quarter ended June 2012 (April 2012 to June 2012).

Employment in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between the quarters ended September 2011 and September 2012.

The September 2012 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey shows that an estimated 8 440 000 people were employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy. This reflects an annual increase of about   82 000 employees (+1,0%) compared with September 2011 (an estimated 8 358 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between the quarters ended September 2011 and September 2012.

The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended September 2012 (July 2012 to September 2012) amounted to R369 881 million. This reflects an annual increase of R29 568 million (+8,7%) compared with the quarter ended September 2011 (July 2011 to September 2011).

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal
non-agricultural sector increased between May 2012 and August 2012.

The September 2012 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey reflected a quarterly increase of 2,8% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector between May 2012 (an estimated R13 578) and August 2012 (an estimated R13 960).  

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal
non-agricultural sector increased between August 2011 and August 2012.

The September 2012 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey reflected an annual increase of 8,0% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector between August 2011 (an estimated R12 923) and August 2012 (an estimated R13 960).
