Key findings for the quarter ended September 2010

Employment in the formal non-agricultural sector increased slightly between the quarters ended June 2010 and September 2010.

The September 2010 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey shows that the number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy increased by about 17 000 persons (+0,2%) from June 2010 (an estimated 8 132 000 employees) to September 2010 (an estimated 8 149 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between the quarters ended June 2010 and September 2010.

The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended September 2010 (July 2010 to September 2010) amounted to R304 974 million. This reflects a quarterly increase of R8 615 million (+2,9%) compared with the quarter ended June 2010 (April 2010 to June 2010).

Employment in the formal non-agricultural sector increased slightly between the quarters ended September 2009 and September 2010.

The September 2010 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey shows that an estimated 8 149 000 people were employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector of the South African economy. This reflected an annual increase of about 5 000 employees (+0,1%) compared with September 2009 (an estimated 8 144 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between the quarters ended September 2009 and September 2010.

The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended September 2010 (July 2010 to September 2010) amounted to R304 974 million. This reflects an annual increase of R34 419 million (+12,7%) compared with the quarter ended September 2009 (July 2009 to September 2009).

Key findings regarding average monthly earnings including bonuses and overtime payments

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between May 2010 and August 2010.

The September 2010 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey reflected a quarterly increase of 2,2% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector between May 2010 (an estimated R11 570) and August 2010 (an estimated R11 825).  

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector increased between August 2009 and August 2010.

The September 2010 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey reflected an annual increase of 11,7% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural sector between August 2009 (an estimated R10 591) and August 2010 (an estimated R11 825).
