Key findings: P0277 - Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES), June 2009

Employment in the formal non-agricultural business sector decreased between the quarters ended March 2009 and June 2009.

The June 2009 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that the number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector of the South African economy decreased by about 67 000 persons (or -0,8%) from     March 2009 (an estimated 8 326 000 employees) to June 2009 (an estimated 8 259 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between the quarters ended March 2009 and June 2009.

The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended June 2009 (April 2009 to June 2009) amounted to R259 652 million. This reflects a quarterly increase of R429 million (or +0,2%) compared with the quarter ended March 2009 (January 2009 to March 2009).

Employment in the formal non-agricultural business sector decreased between the quarters ended June 2008 and June 2009.

The June 2009 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey shows that an estimated 8 259 000 people were employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector of the South African economy. This reflected an annual decrease of about 198 000 employees (or -2,3%) compared with June 2008 (an estimated 8 457 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between the quarters ended March 2008 and March 2009.

The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended June 2009 (April 2009 to June 2009) amounted to R259 652 million. This reflects an annual increase of R15 631 million (or +6,4%) compared with the quarter ended        June 2008 (April 2008 to June 2008).
 
Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between February 2009 and May 2009.

The June 2009 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey reflected a quarterly increase of 1,2% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector between February 2009 (an estimated R9 614) and May 2009 (an estimated R9 730).  

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between May 2008 and May 2009.

The June 2009 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey reflected an annual increase of 6,4% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector between May 2008 (an estimated R9 142) and May 2009 (an estimated R9 730).
