Employment in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between the quarters ended December 2006 and March 2007.

The March 2007 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that the number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector of the South African economy increased by about 17 000 persons (or 0,2%) from December 2006 (an estimated 8 222 000 employees) to March 2007 (an estimated 8 239 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector decreased between the quarters ended December 2006 and March 2007.

According to the March 2007 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey gross earnings paid to employeesduring the quarter ended March 2007 (January 2007 to March 2007) amounted to R204 541 million. This represents a quarterly decrease of R15 698 million (or -7,1%) compared with the quarter ended December 2006.
